Original legend (copyright:bentham science):
The figure shows structures of a bacterial ribosome and its subunits surrounded by various accessory proteins, tRNA, mRNA, and selected antibiotics. In the center is an electron cryomicroscopic map of the 70S particle from Escherichia coli in complex with EF-Tu and tRNA (ribbons) with the small subunit in light and the large subunit in darker orange. High resolution crystal structures of the 30S subunit from Thermus thermophilus and of the 50S subunit from Deinococcus radiodurans are shown as ribbon plots in the lower left and upper right corners, respectively. Ribosomal RNA is shown in light and dark grey, respectively, ribosomal proteins are in various colors. Other factors can be identified from the legend. IF - initiation factor; EF - elongation factor; RRF - ribosome recycling factor. Coordinates for the structure shown are from the Protein Databank (accession numbers: 1AH9 (IF1); 1DG1 (EF-Tu); 1EK8 (RRF); 1I94, 1I95, 1I96, 1I97 (30S with antibiotics); 1G7S (IF2); 1JGO (A-tRNA, P-tRNA, E-tRNA); 1JZX, 1JZY, 1JZZ, 1KC9, 1K00, 1K01 (50S with antibiotics); 1TIF (IF3N)).
